SALISBURY - Arnold W. Lingle, 83, of Salisbury, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Mr Lingle was born July 2, 1922, in Rowan County, a son of the late Odell Carson and Pearl Brown Lingle. Mr. Lingle was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School and a 1943 graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture education. He received a master 's degree in education from NCSU in 1966. Mr. Lingle was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army Infantry as a small arms instructor during World War II. He taught vocational agriculture in Randolph County for one year and then returned to Rowan County in 1946 where he taught first at Mount Ulla High School, then at West Rowan High School and then at East Rowan High School until 1969 teaching vocational agriculture. In 1969 he became the Vocational Director for Rowan County. He served as Vocational Director until his retirement in 1985, then ending a career of 43 years in education. Mr. Lingle was a former co-president of NCAE District Five, former member of the Legislative Committee of the Rowan County Unit, had served on the Board of Directors of NCAE, and had served on numerous committees and held many offices with NCAE. He had served on numerous county, district and state Vocational Education committees, and National AVA and NCLA committees. He held honorary state and national American Farmer degrees in FFA, had served as sub-committee member on Governor Moore's Education Study Commission. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and American Legion.

Mr. Lingle was a member of Christiana Lutheran Church, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, was a former Council member and had served on the Constitution Committee. Mr. Lingle was also known for his leadership training and knowledge of parliamentary procedure. He was active in the Senior Citizens Bowling League.

His wife, Doris Lagle Lingle, died Nov. 10, 2003, and a sister, Sara Jo Lewis, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Gary Lingle and wife Cynthia of Salisbury, David Lingle and wife Brenda of Salisbury; grandchildren Jason Lingle and wife Shannon of Charlotte, Adam Lingle and wife Julie of Charlotte, Amy Kelly and husband Brian of Charlotte, Scott Lingle of Salisbury and Barbi Goodnight of Salisbury; great-grandchildren Maddox Goodnight of Salisbury, Hailey Lingle of Charlotte, and Sophie Lingle of Charlotte.

Services : Graveside Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christiana Lutheran Church cemetery by the Rev. Carl M. Haynes, pastor of Christiana Lutheran Church.

Visitation : The family will be at Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday for the visitation.
