Notes for Mary “Rachel” Bean
Mary "Rachel" Bean Hart

Mary "Rachel" Bean Hart, 91, of Charlotte, passed away on October 16, 2023. Born sixth of eight children to David and Mary Belle Shepherd Bean, Rachel loved being part of a large family. She enjoyed extended family gatherings and hosting Christmas parties. Any opportunity to show hospitality to others made her happy. She remained close with her siblings and their children throughout her life.

On April 24, 1960, Rachel married the love of her life, David Hart. Together they raised two children and enjoyed being active in their five grandchildren's lives. Rachel's artistic abilities, poetic skills, love of conversation, caring for others, and quiet faith live on in each of them. Quick to smile and never afraid to laugh at herself, the family has fond memories of "Grandmother" getting lost in a game of Spoons and finding humor in daily life. Family was most important to her, and she wanted each one to know they were loved deeply.

Rachel worked as a church secretary for many years at Dilworth United Methodist Church and Sharon United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed caring for and laughing with church members. Her dry sense of humor kept the ministers and church staff entertained. Also active in her home church, Rachel enjoyed participating in the United Methodist Women's circles and various Bible studies.

Midway through life, Rachel became passionate about TOPS, an organization devoted to healthy eating and weight loss. She developed treasured friendships, attended conference retreats throughout the state, and prided herself as the chapter poet.

In her later years, Rachel lived vicariously through the adventures and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Even when communication became difficult for her, she was eager to hear their tales and celebrate their successes. Her entire face would light up when they entered the room. As her memory faded, you would often find her and Dave sitting close together, holding hands while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. They cared for and loved each other for 63 years.

Rachel is survived by her husband of 63 years, David Hart; son, Walter Hart and his wife Laura; daughter, Susan Hart Leonard and her husband David; grandchildren, Tyler Hart and his wife Tiffany, Patrick Hart and his wife, Miranda, Sarah Leonard, Katie Leonard, and Savannah Hart. She is also survived by her sister Rozelle Jacobs, brother-in-law Fraser Hart, sister-in-law Jean Hart, sister-in-law Jean Blanding Dickey, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM with a service to celebrate Rachel's life following at 1:00 PM, in the chapel of Tribute & Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 N Sharon Amity Rd., Charlotte, NC. Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC.
