Notes for Lonzo Howard Arey
Lonzo Howard Arey

Lonzo Howard Arey, 95, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on November 17, 2022. He was born on November 6, 1927 in Rowan County, NC, the second son out of five boys to the late David Reuben Arey and Mrs. Oma Plyler Arey. He was a graduate of Richfield High School and Pfeiffer College. Mr. Arey proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corp. He retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 35 years. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.

Lonzo was an avid outdoorsman, hunting deer and turkey into his nineties. He was a sharp shooter with a slingshot, which he often carried in his back pocket. Mr. Arey enjoyed farming, sharing his vegetables, and eating breakfast out with his son and friends. He was clever with a quick wit and happiest when joking with others and teaching his grandchildren life skills.

Lonzo married Martha Ellen Surratt on October 21, 1950. Together they raised four children and celebrated 70 years of marriage. Mrs. Arey preceded her beloved “LH” in death on January 10, 2021.

In addition to his parents and loving wife, Mr. Arey is preceded in death by two brothers, David Leon Arey and Dr. Vaughn Arey, a sister-in-law Betty Huffman Arey, and brothers-in-law Donald Surratt and Frank Surratt.

Those left to cherish his memory include his four children, Debbie (Jim) Dyer, Sandra (Dan) Lesley, Kim (Laura) Arey, and Lisa (Lonnie) Barrier, two brothers Johnny C. Arey and Clyde (Mary Catherine) Arey, sister-in-laws Dottie Krech, Norma Surratt, and Dr. Jo Ann Arey.

PaPaw/PePaw was loved and greatly admired by his 10 grandchildren, Shelly (Charles) Batts, Jodie (Jason) Cross, Jennifer (Wesley) Smith, Drew Lesley, Justin Lesley, Hunter Barrier, Haley (Nolan) Stehr, Taylor (Ethan Hiatt) Arey, Preston (Shelby) Lesley, and Logan Arey.

He was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren, Ella, Brinley, and Callen Batts, Corbin and Mia Cross, August Spencer, Sadie Smith, Fletcher and Judd Stehr, Tate Hiatt, and two on the way. Lonzo had numerous nieces, nephews, and forever lasting friends.

The family gratefully extends a special “Thank You” to caregivers Joyce Rhoton, Stephanie McCray, Heather Hanson, and Hospice nurse, Megan Lyerly for their compassion and loving care.

Visitation for family and friends will be Monday, November 21st from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Family Life Center.

The funeral service will follow in the church sanctuary at 3:00 pm, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jarrod Lanning. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Building Improvement Fund.
