SALISBURY - David Leon Arey, 84, of Salisbury, passed away Feb. 2, 2009, at the N.C. Lutheran Home.

Mr. Arey was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Rowan County, a son of the late David Reuben Arey and Mrs. Oma Plyler Arey. In 1942, he graduated from Richfield High School in Stanly County. He was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church in Stewart, Fla.

In 1943, he joined the Army Air Corp, and by the end of World War II, he was a pilot of a B-29.

After World War II, Dave and a friend purchased a private airfield in New Port News, Va., where he was a pilot instructor. Then he became an airline pilot with United Airlines as a Captain of a 747, retiring after 34 years of service.

His main hobbies were blue water fishing - he caught some prize-winning fish - golf and tennis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Betty Grinalds Arey, in 1997 after 48 years of marriage, and his second wife, Mrs. Anne Arey, in 1999. A son also preceded him in death, Ricky Arey, in 1977.

Survivors include four brothers, Dr. Vaughn Arey of Galax, Va., and Lonzo Arey, Clyde Arey and Johnny C. Arey, all of Salisbury. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A special friend also survives, Mrs. Jean Kress of Stewart, Fla.

Service: A Memorial Service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Powles Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gary Coble, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home from 4-5 p.m. Saturday.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.
