Willette Ritchie Yates

SALISBURY - Willette Ritchie Yates, 88, of Salisbury, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury.

Born January 23, 1920 in Faith, Willette was the daughter of the late William J. Ritchie, Sr., and the late Grace Beck Ritchie. She attended school at Faith Elementary School and Granite Quarry High School.

Willette served in the US Army Air Force during World War II. She was a charter member of the Faith American Legion Post # 327 and a charter member of the Faith American Legion Auxiliary and served as its first president. She was active in the Faith P.T.A. and was a past president.

Willette was a lifelong member of Faith Baptist Church, where she worked with children and the youth in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Training and Mission programs. The Baby Bed Nursery was named in her honor. She was a charter member of the Blanche Robertson Baptist Young Women's Auxiliary and she served as Director of the Sunbeam Band and the Baptist Young Women's Auxiliary for the Rowan Baptist Association in the early 50's.

Willette was a member of the Faith Girl's All Star Softball team. This team played in the World's Amateur Softball Championship Games in Chicago in 1936, after winning the North Carolina and South Carolina Championship Games.

Willette married Claude Morris Yates, Sr., on Dec. 24, 1943 and he died on June 24, 1988. Her sons, Rev. Tony Yates, who died August 2007, Larry William Yates, Phillip Morris Yates, and an infant son also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, C. M. Yates, Jr. and wife Kay of Rockwell; sister, Edith Ketner of Salisbury; five grandchildren, Chad Yates, Angie Sifford, Renae Johnson, Tony M. Yates, Jr., and Michelle Yates; and five great grandchildren.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday, January 10 at Faith Baptist Church and the remainder of the time at the home of the son, C M. Yates of Rockwell.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10 at Faith Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Joe Smith, Pastor. The Faith Baptist Young Women and the Faith American Legion Post # 327 Ladies Auxiliary will be seated in a group at the church.

Memorials: Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church.
