SALISBURY - Pauline Lyerly Canup, age 81, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at the Preston House in Charlotte.
Born Jan. 6, 1925, in Faith, Mrs. Canup was the daughter of the late Charles Wesley Lyerly and Nellie Goodman Lyerly. She was a 1943 graduate of Granite Quarry High School and was in the first class that attended for 12 years of education rather than 11. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, as well as a member of WELCA. She was one of the first female members of the church council. Mrs. Canup taught Sunday School, Bible School and sang in the church choir. She spent many years of her adult life as a primary caregiver to her parents, father-in-law and husband.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Julian Canup, on Jan. 18, 1996, along with two brothers, Carl Lyerly and Fred Lyerly.
Surviving are sons Andy Canup of Salisbury and R. Terry Canup of Charleston, SC; and sister Mary Esparza of Elk View, WV.
Visitation: A Visitation will be Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home.
Service: A funeral service will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The body will lie in-state for 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The Rev. William S. Ketchie and the Rev. Floyd Bost will officiate.
Memorials: Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Perpetual Cemetery Fund; or Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, Charlotte, NC.
