SALISBURY - Harley Lee Canup, 99, of Salisbury, passed away Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 6, 1912, in Salisbury to the late David L. Canup and Ida Julian Canup, he attended Rowan County schools and Catawba College and graduated from North Carolina State College in 1935 with a BS in Textiles. He lettered in a variety of college sports.

Mr. Canup worked with Springs Industries in South Carolina, the textile industry in North Carolina, served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Mullany and worked for the U.S. Post Office, where he retired in 1975 after 28 years of service. During retirement he taught welding at Rowan Technical Community College.

Mr. Canup was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was active with the Cub Scouts, attended and taught Sunday School and was on the Cemetery Committee. He also served on the church council and was part of the St. Paul's Lutheran Men. Throughout the years and in many ways, he volunteered his time to the benefit of the church.

An honorable and generous man, Mr. Canup cherished his wife and sons and dedicated himself to their well-being. This same love extended to his grandchildren, who will remember him for his creative abilities, sense of humor and devotion.

Mr. Canup was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Kennerly Canup; his brothers, Arnold Canup and Luther Paul Canup; and sister Ruth Bernhardt.

He is survived by his three sons, John Canup and wife Carolyn of Pfafftown, Paul Canup and wife Crystal of Salisbury and Tim Canup and wife Sandy of Salisbury; a brother, Carl Ray Canup of Salisbury; seven grandchildren, Michael Canup and wife Heather of Winston-Salem, Matthew Canup and wife Lauren of Rural Hall, Joshua Canup and wife Danielle of Salisbury, Sarah Hicks and husband Greg of Concord, Elijah Canup of Salisbury, Deana Beaver Hall and husband Heath of Atlanta, Ga., and Carrie Beaver Kirby and husband Jacob of Rockwell; and six great-grandchildren, Lucas Canup, Alexander Canup, Hila Mae Canup, Colby Canup, Levi Kirby and Luke Kirby.

Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 30) at Summersett Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (Oct. 31) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mr. Canup will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service, which will be conducted by Rev. William Ketchie. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund or Pastor's Discretionary Fund, 205 St. Paul's Church Road, Salisbury, NC.
