GRANITE QUARRY - Willie Foil "Bill" Brinkley, Jr., 83, of Granite Quarry, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

Son of the late Willie Foil Brinkley, Sr. and Mamie Garland Brinkley, Bill was born March 26, 1926, in Thomasville. He was a 1943 graduate of Granite Quarry High School and a 1950 graduate of Catawba College. Mr. Brinkley served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Nevada. While in the Navy he was involved in the D-Day, Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns.

He was owner and operator of W.F. Brinkley & Son Construction Co. A few of Mr. Brinkley's more noted projects were the construction of the East and West Rowan High School football fields and the Oak Island Lighthouse in 1958. He was involved in construction projects in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Mr. Brinkley was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and the James Mathis Sunday School Class. He had served as Treasurer, Trustee and was active in all phases of his church.

He was a member of the Livengood-Peeler-Wood American Legion Post 448. He was one of the original members of the Granite Quarry Fire Department and was a former member of the Salisbury Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Mrs. Voneva Brown Brinkley, whom he married in September 1947; sons David F. Brinkley and wife Shannon of Salisbury and Michael B. Brinkley of Granite Quarry; grandchildren Major Ian Brinkley and wife Dawn of Sneeds Ferry, Damon Brinkley and wife Erin of Salisbury, Mark Brinkley and wife Claire of Faith, Matthew Brinkley and Mitchell Brinkley, both of Granite Quarry; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services: The funeral service will be Saturday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Granite Quarry, conducted by Rev. H.L. Talbert, pastor. Burial will follow in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Rowan County Veteran's Honor Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home Friday, March 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.; and at other times, the family will be at the home of grandson Mark Brinkley and wife Claire of Faith.

Memorials: May be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, Roofing Fund, P.O. Box 315, Granite Quarry, NC, 28072.

Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell is assisting the Brinkley family.
