MOCKSVILLE - Clarence Alfred Call, 85, of Deadmon Road, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Davie County Hospital.

He was born May 2, 1922, in Davie County to the late Taylor B. and Cora Phelps Call. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving as a landing craft Coxswain off the USS Thomas Jefferson. He saw action in the lead boat in the first invasion wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day, along with invasions in southern France and Okinawa. He was a charter member of Ellis Cross Roads Fire Department.

Mr. Call enjoyed gospel music, having sung in a quartet. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, gardening, mowing his yard and loved fishing with his wife, Lucy. Most off all he loved his family, who dearly loved him.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Athalene Lyerly Call, on January 1, 1999; one sister, Ruby McDaniel; and four brothers, Graham, Oscar, Charles and Jim Call.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Crotts Call of the home; two sons, Perry (Linda) Call of Mocksville and David (Brenda) Call of China Grove; five grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Spittle, Dana (Mark) Southard, Becky Call, Jason (Christy) Call and Laura Call; five stepchildren, Faye (John) Long of Apex, Ray Crotts, Bob (Barbara) Crotts, Darrell Crotts and Ben (Bonnie) Crotts, all of Mocksville; 17 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Janowski of Florida; and a brother, Ralph (Margaret) Call of Mocksville.

Service: A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8 at Concord United Methodist Church with Rev. Arnold Gosnell and Rev. Bobby Seagroves officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury with military honors conducted by Veterans of Foreign War Memorial Honor Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 7 at Eaton Funeral Home.
