Notes for Catherine Sherrill
Catherine Sherrill Broyhill

Catherine Sherrill Broyhill, 87, of Trinity Oaks, Salisbury, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at Lutheran Nursing Home in Salisbury. She was born on Aug. 10, 1918, daughter of the late Roy and Calley Eagle Sherrill. After graduating from Mitchell College and Greensboro College, she taught for several years in the Troutman and Harmony schools. Catherine also passed teaching exams with distinction in South Carolina and taught briefly in Clover, S.C.

On Dec. 30, 1940, Catherine married Fred Broyhill, who was sent almost immediately to serve in Europe until the end of 1945 as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne. Afterward, Catherine and Fred lived in several places in North and South Carolina, with Catherine teaching and Fred working as a textile engineer. In the 1950s, they began an odyssey of travel and work throughout the world, living in Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Thailand, Iran, Brazil and Singapore.

After retirement in 1975, the couple lived in Florida and Statesville until Fred's death in 1992. Catherine then moved to Trinity Oaks, a retirement community in Salisbury. Besides serving in public schools, Catherine regularly taught Sunday school classes at Broad Street Methodist Church and in Salisbury. She was an active member in women's clubs, animal protection societies and book clubs. Her knowledge of the world through personal experience and literature was shared with all around her, and she made a big difference in the lives of her numerous friends, students and family members.

Besides contributing regularly to various charities, Catherine established educational trusts at Greensboro College, Mitchell College and North Carolina State University. To the very end, she was committed to the spread of education and knowledge.

Memorials may be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 1382 Shelton Ave., Statesville, NC, or Mitchell College Development Fund, 500 W. Broad St., Statesville, NC.

Catherine was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Ruby and Alice Kloet. She is survived by her sister, Frances Barrier, a long-time resident of Statesville now living in Thomasville. Catherine also has many other family members spread across the United States.

Memorial services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Trinity Oaks on Klumac Road in Salisbury and at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville.
