STATESVILLE
Frances Elizabeth Sherrill Barrier Mar. 19, 1922 - Jan, 22, 2014

Mrs. Frances Elizabeth Sherrill Barrier, 91, of Statesville passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Thomasville Medical Center in Thomasville, NC.

Mrs. Barrier was born March 19, 1922 in Statesville, NC and was the second of five daughters born to the late Roy Ransom Sherrill and Callie Eagle Sherrill. She attended Mitchell College and then graduating from Lenior-Rhyne College; she was a kindergarten and first grade teacher for 20 years and then substituted for 3 years after her retirement.

Frances was a proud member of the Delta chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota teaching sorority and over her years of membership held every executive office both on the state and national level. She loved to travel to their annual membership meetings all over the US. These members were some of her dearest friends.

On August 12, 1938, she was married to the late Frank Parker Barrier and they had three sons. She and Frank were loyal members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Statesville and held leadership rolls in many areas of the church. When Frank passed away in 1996, family and friends began the Frank and Frances Barrier Senior Adult Fellowship Fund, which provides many trips, outings, programs and meals for senior members at Wesley Memorial U.M.C. Frances took pride and pleasure at serving as Chair of the committee that planned and executed these events. Her later years were spent in Thomasville at a retirement community she proudly chose herself. While there she attended Fair Grove United Methodist Church.

Among her many interests and talents were bridge, gardening and flower arranging and golf. She was a past member of the Statesville Women's Club, Statesville Country Club and was a charter member of her garden club. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, as a Court Watcher, for Big Brothers Big Sisters, handicapped camps and classrooms of Statesville schools. She was a member of The NEA and was a board member of the YMCA.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Eugene Barrier (Ellen) of Winston-Salem, Richard Parker Barrier (Diane) of Camas, WA; nine grandchildren, Melanie Barrier (Michelle Grewe), Rani B. Sanderson (Gerald), Tim Barrier (Ingrid), Greta B. Burco (Doug), Gardner Barrier (Heather), Thomas Barrier (Tiffany), Hillary B. Clark (Matt), Andy Barrier, Thad Barrier; 10 great grandchildren, Alexandra, Siri, Karolina, Maggie, Oscar, Livy, Maya, Ava, Frank and George. She loved them all and was a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. She also was a special aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Norman "Jerry" Gerald Barrier (Joanne) and four sisters, Catherine S. Broyhill, Eleanor S. Ruby, Alice S. Kloet and Nancy Jane Sherrill.

A memorial service celebrating the life and legacy of Frances will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Statesville with Mike Jordan (dear friend, former pastor and "4th" son) presiding along with Rev. Danny Leonard. Visiting among family and friends will follow at the church.

The family would like to ask that any memorial gifts be directed to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 825 Wesley Dr., Statesville, NC, in order to continue the work and love they both had for the Church.

Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family.

The family is especially grateful to Nellie Finney, who was Frances' friend and companion in her most recent years, and the entire staff at Piedmont Crossings, which she called home for the last years of her life.
