ALBEMARLE - Mr. Laton Oden Burris, 92, formerly of US 52 Hwy N., New London died at 2:30 AM November 10, 2004 in the Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Mr. Burris was born September 6, 1912 in Stanly County, and was the son of the late Mary Lula Frick and James Allen Burris and was a retired employee of Wiscassett Mills Co.

He attended elementary through Junior College at the Mitchell School, which is now Pfeiffer College. He was an active alumni until the last several years. He was involved as a leader for 20 years with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Burris was a founding member of the Stanly County Genealogy Society and helped to research many books which were published and to seek out and log names and dates in many of our historical cemeteries.

He and his wife were members of New London United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for 50 years.

He is survived by a son, Oden "Butch" Stokes Burris and his wife Linda of New London, half sisters, Doris Kirk, Evelyn Cook, Millie Little and Dorothy Murph, Margie Bonds, all of Concord and Lessie Bost of Albemarle; half brothers, Elbert Burris of Concord and Earl Burris of West Jefferson.

His wife, Mary Stokes Burris, a sister Essie Sides Burris and special brother-in-law Marvin Stokes preceded him in death.

His funeral will be a Graveside Service in New London Cemetery at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 13, 2004, with the Rev. Tony Allen officiating.

His family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Stanly Funeral Home, Inc.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Stokes-Burris Scholarship Fund, Pfeiffer University, Office of Advancement, P.O. Box 960, Misenheimer, NC 28109.
