Notes for Justin Edward Monroe
Two Firefighters Killed, Five Others Injured

Firefighters Justin Monroe and Victor Isler were killed and five others injured fighting a massive five alarm blaze at a business in Salisbury, NC. Both firefighters were assigned to Squad 1.

Firefighters Victor Isler and Justin Monroe were pulled from the warehouse and manufacturing area later. Isler was pronounced dead on arrival at Rowan Regional Medical Center, and Monroe died at the scene.

Fire Chief Bob Parnell said both were Salisbury city firefighters who were part of the hose team that was first to respond to the blaze along with five other crews.

Crews battled dense, black smoke, slanting rain and high winds that made the fire suddenly expand from the office area into the millwork and casework departments. Woods, oils, thinners, lacquers, all the elements one would expect in a millwork operation — also fueled the flames.

The state fire marshal, the State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.

Justin was hired by the Salisbury Fire Department on a part-time basis last October, but had continued to be active at Miller's Ferry. He also held a part-time paid position at the Spencer Fire Department and was enrolled as full-time student in the fire science program at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.

Monroe was a son of Lisa Ferrell Monroe and Eddie Harold Monroe and a 2006 graduate of North Rowan High School.
