Edgar Charles Hatley

Edgar Charles Hatley, 92, of 12329 Hazard Road, Oakboro, died Nov. 28, 2009, at Britthaven of the Piedmont.

His funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, with a 30-minute state at Barbee's Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Reverends Terry Burris, Lowell Brown and Bill Thompson officiated and burial was in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, at Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. The family meeting place was at his home.

Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Stanly County, he was the son of the late Marshall Alton and Lucy Arabelle Smith Hatley and was a retired carpenter and contractor with home building. Edgar enjoyed wood work and in retirement spent hours in his shop. He also enjoyed his garden.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lizzie Whitley and Inez Hatley; three brothers, James Hatley, Fred Hatley and Marcus Hatley; and a grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Auta Mae Tartlon Hatley; three sons, Charles Hatley and wife, Jewell, of Oakboro, James Thomas Hatley of Albemarle and Edgar David Hatley and wife, Jane, of Oakboro; two daughters, Bobbie Kay Galloway and husband, Cecil, of Mt. Holly and Ruth Elizabeth Troutman of Albemarle; four sisters, Sally Thompson, Bertie Hatley and Betty Davis and husband, Allen, all of Oakboro, and Frances Pope and husband, Larry, of Holden Beach; a brother, Melvin Hatley; 12 grandchildren; one step granddaughter; 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
