Notes for Carl James Hill
Carl James Hill

Carl James Hill, 83, of Gold Hill, passed away, Sunday December 23, 2018 at Stanly Manor.

Carl was born February 3, 1935 in Union County, son of the late Paul F. Hill and Georgia Hartsell Hill. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran for many years and was a former member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran. In addition to his parents, Carl was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years Joyce Mullis Hill and brother Ray Hill.

Carl was an avid sports player. In 1948, Mt. Pleasant High School did not have enough boys for a team so the coach got the “biggest boy” from eight grade and this was the beginning of his football career. He was an exceptional player starting at every position on the football field. He won a trophy for captain of three counties, Cabarrus, Rowan and Davidson.

He also played baseball; third base and catcher. He spent his summers traveling with the American Legion team (four years). During his time on the team he became known as the “Home Run King”.

After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart and quickly found interest in other things. Aside from his two daughters, his favorites include the six years spent on the Charlotte Police Department’s Motorcycle Patrol.

He joined NASCAR in 1976 as a technical inspector but quickly promoted to a track official. During his time with NASCAR he traveled with the racing circuit from coast to coast. Some of his many accolades include being featured on several race trading cards and a special appearance in the movie ‘Stroker Ace’. He retired as Chief Steward of NASCAR in 1996.

Carl is survived by two daughters, Debbie H. Lambert (James) and Teresa Starr Hill of Gold Hill; one sister Peggy Helms; six grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends Saturday December 29 from 3-5pm at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Sunday December 30, at 3pm with the Rev. Dr. Mark Ericson officiating. Burial will follow at Cabarrus Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers memorials in Carl’s’ honor can be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 100 St. John’s Church Rd., Concord NC.
