THOMASVILLE - Mr. Joseph Wesley McDowell, 73, a resident of 94 Lowery Dr., died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at the Community General Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, by the Rev. B. Joe Parker, the Rev. Robert W. Little and the Rev. Ardis Payne. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. McDowell was born in High Point, July 3, 1925, a son of William Atlas and Dovie Morgan McDowell. He was a graduate of Jones Business College and was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Normandy invasion. Mr. McDowell worked at High Point City Hall and was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and was active for many years with ARC of High Point. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men, Men's Choir and Men's Bible Class. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jerina McDowell; sisters, Clara Morgan, Ethel Hayworth and Frances Nance; and a brother, Arnold McDowell.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Hedrick McDowell of the home; a daughter, Pat Dawson and her husband, Rick, Sr. of Thomasville; two sons, Jimmy McDowell of the home and Phil McDowell of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Margie McDowell and her husband, Terry, Sr. of High Point and Mary Winslow and her husband, Troy of Thomasville; a brother, Harding A. McDowell and his wife, Polly of High Point; sister-in-law, Lucy McDowell of Greensboro; two brothers-in-law, Myron Hayworth, Sr. of High Point

The body will remain at the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at the funeral home.
