Jerry Lonnie Hammond

Jerry Lonnie Hammond, 72, of Salisbury, passed away on Wednesday June 24, 2015, at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House. He was born on Jan. 13, 1943 in Kershaw County, S.C., to the late Alley Wynn Hammond and Charlotte Hawkins Hammond.

Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was educated in the Rowan County school system and worked as a independent truck driver. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tara Brown; a brother, Edwin Hammond; and two sisters, Devere Griffin and Vida Barbee.

He is survived by a son, Randy Hammond and fiancee Donna Day of Concord; a daughter, Angela Leatherman and husband J.C. of Woodleaf; a brother, Bobby Ray Hammond of Lexington; a sister, Carol Kolb; three grandchildren, Travis Brown, Jason Hammond and Lindsay Leatherman; and one great grandchild, Eva Brown.

Visitation: A Visitation will be held on Monday, June 29 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Powles Funeral Home.

Service: The Funeral Service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 29 at the Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. James Messer Jr. of Pilgram Freewill Baptist Church.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rowan County Hospice and Palliative Care.

Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell is assisting the Hammond family.
