Notes for Betty Jean Walker
Jean Walker Knight

NORFOLK, VA - Jean Walker Knight passed away July 20, 2016 at the age of 87. Born October 5, 1928 in Mount Vernon GA to the late Roy and Agnes Walker, Jean was the eldest of their three daughters.

She graduated from Wesleyan College (GA) and later earned her Master's degree while teaching English at LaGrange College. Pursuing her Doctorate at Emory University on a teaching fellowship, she met and later married Karl F. Knight. In 1962 they settled in Norfolk VA when Karl joined the English faculty at Old Dominion University where together they raised two children.

Jean was preceded in death by middle sister, Ann but is survived by her youngest sister, Peggy and her husband, Bobby Jo Goode of Vidalia, GA. Jean is also survived by Karl, her husband of 56 years, daughter Meg and son-in-law, Agim Zabeli of Norfolk VA, and son, Charlie Knight of Richmond VA. Additionally she is survived by grandchildren Michael Jennifer and husband, Steve Scannapieco, Laura Walker Zabeli, and John-Walker Knight as well as great grandson Wesley Zabeli. Two more great grandsons will enter the world soon.

Jean lived a gracious and compassionate life, bringing light to those around her. Her kindness, intellect, and good nature continued to attract others to her even as Alzheimer's took so much from her. This remained evident to the end of her life as she earned a special place in the hearts of many who provided such wonderful care for her at the memory care units of The Ballantine and Province Place in Norfolk.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the staff of both facilities for their loving attention.

A small visitation to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday July 31st from 2-3pm at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. 1501 Colonial Ave, Norfolk, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
