Virginia Lorene Stephens Hopkins

After a brief illness, Virginia Lorene Stephens Hopkins, 93, died on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Salisbury Hospice House.

Mrs. Hopkins was born on Oct. 22, 1923, to Marcellus Fountain Stephens and Opal Esther Hodge Stephens in Globe, Ariz. Mrs. Hopkins graduated from Siloam Springs High School in Siloam Springs, Ark. In her younger years, Mrs. Hopkins excelled in violin, played in the symphony orchestra and performed many solos at numerous times. Several years ago, Mrs. Hopkins continued her private violin lessons at Catawba College.

Mrs. Hopkins entered Draughons Business University in Oklahoma City, Okla., and completed a secretarial business course and also received her GS rating for government employment. It was there that she met and married Walter Aaron (Hoppy) Hopkins from Salisbury who was stationed at Will Rogers Air Force Base as a Sergeant. They were married on Jan. 17, 1942.

Mrs. Hopkins retired from the VA Medical Hospital after 30 years of employment as a Psychometrist in the Psychology department working directly with veterans, where she retired in 1986. Mrs. Hopkins attended Catawba College for a two-year period as a special student for a portion of her training. Following her retirement, Mrs. Hopkins then studied and received her North Carolina Real Estate Brokers License and worked in the Rowan County area with a local real estate firm as Lorene Hopkins, the name she preferred and was known as. Mrs. Hopkins retired her second time in 1997.

In 1946, Mrs. Hopkins was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church (formerly Morlan Park Baptist Church). She served in numerous areas over the years as pianist, Adult Women's Sunday School Class, and church treasurer in later years. Mrs. Hopkins was a long time member of the WMU and the Senior Group.

Mrs. Hopkins is preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years; her son, Walter Aaron (Ronny) Hopkins Jr.; daughter, Scarlett Suzanne Hopkins Neal; grandson Christopher Aaron Hopkins; two sisters, Dorothea McClure and Carmen Moore; and a brother, Claude Stephens.

Mrs. Hopkins is survived by her three daughters, Stephanie Esther Hopkins Fields (Dean), Marla Hopkins Blake (LA) and Carmen Hopkins; Aunt Jewel; many devoted extended family and friends; grandchildren, Stephen Benny Dyson, Tiffany Leigh Hopkins and Sean Edward Hopkins; and great-grandchildren, Annabelle Grace Dyson and Christopher Aaron Hopkins Jr.

Visitation: Visitation will be at Powles Staton Funeral Home on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 12-1 p.m. Service: The funeral service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hopkins will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017, in the chapel at Powles Staton Funeral Home at 1 p.m. with burial at Brookhill Memorial Gardens, conducted by Pastor Robin Albright and Pastor Rickey Brown.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Southside Baptist Church, 500 Morlan Park Road, Salisbury, NC.
