Betty Jean Benfield Barringer

Betty Jean Benfield Barringer, 88, of Salisbury, passed away peacefully from this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 23, 2023.

She was born January 28, 1934 in Statesville to the late Ralph Eugene and Eva Susan Blackwelder Benfield. She was educated in Iredell and Rowan County Schools, graduating from China Grove High School in 1952. After graduation, Betty worked as a telephone operator for Southern Bell.

She married the late John Henry Barringer on May 15, 1955. Betty was a homemaker and seamstress for many years before dedicating her life to education. For 20 years, she worked at Morgan Elementary School in the cafeteria, library, and then classroom as a teacher assistant.

After her retirement, Betty found joy in gardening and traveling with John on trips all over the world.

She was a life-long member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where she participated in the Lutheran Women Circle group, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years. She is survived by her son, John Michael Barringer and wife Terrie of Prince Frederick, MD; daughter, Kay Simmons and husband Phil of Salisbury; two granddaughters, Courtney Lassiter and husband Ran of Salisbury, Carleigh Wetmore and husband Daniel of Granite Quarry; great-granddaughter, Layla Wetmore; sisters, Shirley Barbee of Salisbury, Nancy Misenheimer and husband Jim of Kannapolis; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family extends gratitude to the staff at Autumn Care who cared for Betty over the last few years.

Visitation: The family will greet friends and relatives on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 11:00 am - 11:45 am at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Family Life Center in Salisbury.

Service: The funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm in the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church sanctuary, with Rev. Dr. Jarrod Lanning, officiating.

Interment: Burial will take place in the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC.
