John Albert Pless

The Rev. John Albert Pless, 60, of R. 3, the executive director of the North Carolina Lutheran Homes serving Salisbury, Hickory and Albemarle, died Tuesday afternoon at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.

The funeral will be held at 4 P. M. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Salisbury with Dr. Samuel L. Sox and Dr. Ernest L. Misenheimer officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service and burial will be in Carolina Memorial Park in Concord.

Mr. Pless, who was born in Rowan County in 1917, had served a joint parrish at St. Luke's and Pilgrim Lutheran Churches for 11 years and had been pastor of Saint Luke's Lutheran Church in Tyro for 27 years.

In 1933, Mr. Pless graduated from Mt. Pleasant Collegiate Institute. He received his B.S. degree from Duke University in 1937 and his bachelor of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 1940. He also attended Roanoke College.

Mr. Pless was ordained in 1940 by the North Carolina Synod of United Lutheran Church. In 1971 he received his licensed administration of nursing homes degree. He was also a recipient of the distinguished service award from Lenoir Rhyne College.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Rentz Pless of the home; one son, the Rev. John Edward Pless of R. 5, Salisbury; one daughter, Joanna Bea Pless of the home; two brothers, Charles M. Pless Sr. of 23 Harrington Avenue, and Paul D. Pless of Sterling, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the N.C. Lutheran Home.
