John Monroe Taylor

John Monroe Taylor, 98, of Rockwell, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at his residence.

He was born March 10, 1923, in Gold Hill to the late Ernest McKee Taylor and Annie Carter Taylor. Mr. Taylor attended Rowan County Schools and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving with Patton's 3rd Army, 42nd Cavalry, Recon Troop A in World War II from 1943 until 1945. During his military service, he served in France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Belgium, driving a half-track for the troop commander.

Mr. Taylor was self employed in the grading industry, clearing numerous sites throughout Rowan County for homes. He enjoyed fishing, rabbit hunting, bird hunting, and deer hunting. Mr. Taylor was a member of Big Oak Archery Club and Gold Hill Hunt Club and was known for his accuracy shooting a bow and arrow. He played semi-pro baseball in the 1930s with the Yadkin Valley League and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He also enjoyed racing go-carts and NASCAR.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Weaver Taylor; son, Alan Ray Taylor; and siblings, William Taylor, Alma Taylor, Inez Ridenhour, and Helen Earnhardt.

He is survived by his grandson, Zachary Taylor and wife, Courtney, of Savannah, GA; and granddaughter, Krystal Jacobs and husband, Ryan, of Rockwell.

The family would also like to thank Mr. Taylor's longtime neighbors, the Earnhardt family for their many years of friendship and support.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Saturday, April 24, 2021, 1:00 pm-1:45 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home in Rockwell.

The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm on Saturday in the chapel of Powles Staton Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Mike Herring.

Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House, 1229 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC; or American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK.
