Waco – Mr. Hill Alexander Carpenter, 89, passed away into life eternal on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Kings Mountain Hospice House.

Born in Cleveland County he was a son of the late Della H. and David W. Carpenter of Waco, where he was raised and attended school. He loved sports and played center for the Waco High School basketball team before attending Gardner-Webb College, where he continued his studies and played basketball until returning to help on the family farm at the outset of World War II. Hill worked as a supervisor at the Lambeth Rope Company in Kings Mountain for eighteen years, leaving to pursue his passion for farming and community service. He was a loving and faithful son, husband, father, church leader and public servant. Hill was devoted to his wife, three sons and six grandchildren. He served the Lord as a deacon and faithful member of Waco Baptist Church, was a Boy Scout leader and volunteer fire fighter, was a District Governor for Ruritan National Clubs and was the mayor of Waco for thirty-four years.

Hill was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 48 years, Mabel Goodman Carpenter; two infant siblings; brothers, Bill Carpenter and Ralph Carpenter; and sister, Kathleen Carpenter Price.

He is survived by his sons, Ronald A. (Suzanne) Carpenter of Cherryville, Kenneth B. (Carolyn) Carpenter of Lewisville and Larry C. (Dena) Carpenter of Morganton; sister, Virginia (Tom) Curry of Shelby; as well as grandchildren Ronda, Anna, Justin (wife Jessica), Brandon (wife Kaiti), Andrew and Lindsay; also surviving is a sister-in-law, Selma Carpenter and nephews, Dennis (Dawn) Price, Mills (Debbie) Curry and Jimmy Carpenter.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Stamey~Cherryville Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Ronald Carpenter, 3008 Eaker Drive, Cherryville, NC.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 PM, Sunday April 17, 2011 at Waco Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Capernaum Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Waco Baptist Church Family Life Center or to Capernaum Cemetery Fund, PO Box 297, Waco, NC.

The family also acknowledges with grateful appreciation, the staff and volunteers of Carolina Care Nursing Home in Cherryville, Kings Mountain Hospice House and Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
