CONOVER - Fred Calvin Safrit, age 82, of Conover, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.

Born March 24, 1930, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Albert Alexander Safrit and the late Nannie Manola Eagle Safrit. Fred was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He loved the outdoors and mountains, being an avid hiker and camper. Fred retired from General Electric where he worked for 35 years.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Conover, where he sang in the choir for 53 years and served in various capacities of ministry.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Lee Baucom; and two half-brothers, Otis and Glenn Safrit.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Watson Safrit; daughter Sandy Baucom and husband Danny of Conover; grandson Alex Baucom of Conover; granddaughter Ashley Baucom of Conover; and numerous cousins.

Service: The funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Conover with Rev. Mickey Moree officiating.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Viewing: The body will lie in state on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Burke Mortuary in Newton from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Burial: A private graveside service will be held Thursday, Sept. 13 at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory prior to the service.

Memorials: May be made to First United Methodist Church, Conover, NC; or Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, NC.
