Charles Edwin Springs, the ball turret gunner, never got out of the plane. Five of the ten man crew were KIA. The five who succeeded in bailing out became POWs.
There is disagreement among the surviving crew members as to whether the attacking fighters were Me 262s or FW 190s.
The 44th Bomb Group lost 11 planes on 8 Apr 1944, the worst loss of the war for one mission.
