THE REV GEORGE STEWART BOWDEN JR, for 11 years pastor of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown, died of a heart attack Monday at 10 am on a train platform in Jacksonville, Fla.

Mr. Bowden was en route to visit friends in St Petersburg when stricken, aged 43 years.

Born in Charleston, S C, he was the son of Laura Lentz Bowden and the late George S Bowden Sr.

Mr. Bowden had served 20 years in the ministry and held charges in Waynesboro, Va, Salisbury, NC, Toms Brook, Va and Wilmington, NC, before coming to Funkstown.

He was a member of the Funkstown Lions Club and the town's fire department.

Besides his wife, Lois I (Wandel) Bowden, he is survived by his mother in Hickory, NC; daughter, Lois W Bowden, and son, George S Bowden 3rd, both at home; and a sister, Mrs. Jeff Norris, Hickory, NC.

Services Friday at 2 pm at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Funkstown, the Rev Dr J Fred Fife, president of the Maryland Synod of the Lutheran Churches of Maryland officiating, assisted by the Rev Dr Wilson P Ard. Burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Arrangements handled by Rouzer Funeral Home.
