Fred Nelson Setzer

Fred Nelson Setzer, 82 of Salisbury passed away Friday, November 22, 2019 at the Novant Health Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.

Born April 3, 1937 in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Lavenia Lefler Setzer and Walter Fred Setzer.

Mr. Setzer graduated from Rockwell High School and Gaston Technical College. He was a veteran of the US Army.

Before retiring as a team leader from Freightliner, he owned and operated South Gate Body Shop and was employed for Gregory Motor Company and then Salisbury Lincoln Mercury Mazda.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, served two terms as Governor of the Salisbury Moose Lodge, was a member of the Spencer Moose Lodge, the Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge #576 A.F. & A. M., the Oasis Temple, Rowan Shrine Club, Salisbury Elks Club, and the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342. Mr. Setzer was the first Eagle Scout at St. Matthews Lutheran Church Troop 333, served as a Weblos Leader at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, coached Gray Y football, Little League Baseball, was an Envoy for Xi Alpha Delta Sorority of Beta Sigma Phi, charter member of Italian American Heritage Club, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Fred was an avid fan of American Legion baseball, and in his later years enjoyed watching his grandsons play for them. In retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in high school and college sports.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marshall Ruth Setzer Ludwick, brother-in-law, Donald Ludwick; and daughter –in-law, George Anna Chambers Setzer.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Arone Setzer, whom he met on a blind date on November 23, 1957 and married May 17, 1959. Fred always took great pride in telling everyone he rescued his beloved Dottie from the north. Also surviving are their children, Susan Harrison and husband David of Salisbury, Glenn Edward Setzer of Statesville, Scott Alan Setzer and wife Donna of Salisbury; grandchildren, Rafe Harrison of Salisbury, Anna Edward Setzer of Statesville, Luke Setzer of Salisbury, Joseph Harrison of Salisbury and Hayden Setzer of Salisbury.

The family will receive friends at Summersett Funeral Home from 6-8 PM Tuesday (November 26)

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 AM Wednesday (Nov. 27) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. John Eckert officiating. Entombment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the NC National Guard and the Davie County Military Honor Guard

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rowan County Shrine Club-Shriners Hospital, PO Box 1505, Salisbury, NC.
