July 29, 1945 - May 9, 2017

Carlsbad - Paul Kelly Mikules, 71, of Carlsbad died at his home on May 9, 2017. He was suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy which led to his death.

"Kelly" or "Mike," was born on July 29, 1945 in Washington, D.C. to Rebecca Elizabeth Kirk and Paul Francis Mikules. He was raised primarily by his mother and sister, Cynthia Elizabeth Bollweg (Mikules) in the Washington, D.C. area. He attended Linton Hall Military School, St John's Military Academy and Mount St. Mary's University in Emmetsburg, MD, where he graduated with a degree in Biology. He married Carol Ann Mikules (Hook), of Silver Spring, Maryland, and they remained married for 43 years until her death in 2009. Together they had two children, Michele (Mikules) Marie Bieraugel and Bryan Kelly Mikules.

Carol and Kelly spent their time traveling the world and with their families, especially his children, four grandchildren, Kelly, Carson, Kate and Chloe Bieraugel and his loving sister, Cynthia and her husband, Chuck, and their large family of six children as well as Carol's extended family (the Hooks).

Kelly was a successful business man for 43 years. During that time, he created many wonderful friends with his many companies across the United States. He took the friends and their families as well as his own family on an annual trip to celebrate their accomplishments. He was an extremely generous man, often giving financial assistance and his time to his friends and loved ones. He was a lover of life and family.

He was passionate about exercise, running the New York Marathon in 1991 and cycling in the Children's Athletes Foundation Challenge, riding from San Francisco to San Diego at age 46. He was a very motivating and inspirational person, encouraging everyone around him to be excellent in their endeavors.

After Carol's death, one of his many activities was to pay a weekly visit to Carol's grave site to place fresh flowers. He was involved in the Republican Party, the Nice Guys organization in San Diego, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was an avid horseman who owned many race horses in his life, including a horse that ran in the Kentucky Derby. He had a box at Del Mar and would invite all his friends and family to the races to enjoy a day or many days at the races.

He developed lifelong friendships with many people from his business and recreation, and enjoyed hosting parties, giving toasts and tributes, and often writing poems for his many loved ones. He wrote a book for his children before they left home entitled "Pearls for My Children; 100 useful lessons about life". He insisted that family be his first priority. In his later years, he loved to attend his grandchildren's sporting events and was their devoted fan. Other spectators enjoyed him and would comment if he missed a game.

He is survived by his beloved children and grandchildren, his beautiful sister and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and wife.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Nice Guys organization of San Diego.

Services will be Friday, May 19 at 11 am at the Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias, Rancho Santa Fe with a reception to follow at Kelly's home.
