Notes for Ethel Maurine Smith
Ethel Bates Emmons

Ethel Bates Emmons was gathered into the waiting arms of her Lord Tuesday, December 22, 2009 in Abilene, Texas. She was born April 21, 1908 in Winters, Texas, to Peter Scott Smith and Inez Brock Smith. She was married to Rufus Emmons on August 12, 1934.

Ethel had been a Midland resident from 1957 to 1993 when she moved to be near her son at Abilene Assisted Living Center.

Ethel graduated from North Side High School in Fort Worth, TX and went on to CIA (Texas Women's University) were she graduated with a Home Economics degree. She also obtained a Master's degree from West Texas State University. She taught in schools in Richmond, Matador, Floydada, and Midland for thirty-two years before retiring in 1971. She was a dedicated educator that had a love for the children and her profession that made her an unforgettable teacher to many.

Ethel was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Midland, then of Abilene. While her husband was alive, they made it a priority to read the Bible every day and pray. She truly lived her love for the Lord and her view of life was always accepting the good and bad and going on. Ethel was always available to help anyone in need. Her humor was quiet but witty, entertaining many family and friends.

She was a great cook specializing in many family favorites. Ethel had many special talents: she did exquisite needle point pieces and she grew many lovely irises, bluebonnets, and other plants in her yard. One of the highlights of Ethel's life was celebrating her 100th birthday with over 65 family and friends and letters of congratulations from President George W. Bush, Texas Governor Rick Perry, and House Speaker Tom Craddick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Flo McShan and Gladys Plaxco; and her beloved husband, Rufus.

Ethel is survived by her son, James Rufus Emmons of Abilene; sister-in-law Jo Emmons of Arlington; brother-in-law Claude Emmons of Irving; cousin Isabel Brock; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Saturday, December 26, 2009 between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. Graveside services have been scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Saturday, December 26, 2009 at Resthaven Memorial Park with Dr. Tim Walker officiating.
