PALOUSE, Wash. A memorial service for Morton Swanson, 65, a retired Palouse-area farmer and inventor, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Funeral Home at Palouse with his nephew, the Rev. Nils Swanson, officiating.

Cremation will be held prior to the services.

Swanson, 65, died Sunday morning at his Clarkston home of cancer.

He held four U.S., Canadian and Australian patents on his products and was a pioneer on the No-Till drill system, which is used around the world.

He was born Nov. 27, 1924, at Roundup, Mont., to Alex and Edith Hodge Swanson. He came to the Palouse area with his parents in 1931.

He attended the Eden Valley country school and graduated from Palouse High School in 1942.

After graduating from high school, he farmed with his father east of Palouse. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Army Air Force and served as a flight engineer for a B-29 bomber squadron during World War II. He was a member of the Air Force reserve following the war.

He married Frances Kuehner June 30, 1945, at Amarillo, Texas. They later divorced.

He returned to Palouse in 1946, where he operated the family farm until his retirement in 1986.

He married Cleo M. Dial March 30, 1973, at Coeur d' Alene.

He started Watch Dog, a company which sold monitoring equipment for agricultural equipment. He also owned and operated Swanson's Spray and Manufacturing Company from 1973 until 1990.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge at Colfax, the Palouse American Legion, and the North Dakota-Manitoba No-Till Association. He also was a member of the Selkirk Ski Club at Spokane and the Colfax Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife at the family home at Clarkston; a son, Guy Swanson of Spokane; two stepsons, Dennis White of Prosser, Wash., and Sam White of Pullman; two daughters, Sally Reed of Seattle and Frankie Swinney of Palouse; and seven grandchildren.

Two brothers, Jess and Jay, died previously.

The family suggests any memorials be sent to Family Hospice in care of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Lewiston, Idaho.
