Helen Thomas Cowan
SALISBURY - Helen Thomas Cowan, 92, a resident of Salisbury, passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at The Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.
Born Aug. 17, 1918, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late J.D. and Callie Frick Thomas.
Helen was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury and retired from the textile industry.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who lived a long and full life. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Preceding her in death were her first husband, John W. Gardner, and second husband, Ernest A. Cowan, Jr.; brother Carl Thomas; and sister Ann Brown.
Left to cherish her memories are sons John Gardner and wife Wanda of Alaska, Gary Gardner and wife Pat of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Ernie Cowan and wife Crystal of Salisbury; brothers Ralph Thomas of Salisbury, Larry Thomas and wife Jeannie of Mooresville, Howard Thomas of Texas; sisters June Owen of Texas, Betty Witty and husband Bill, Joyce Trexler and Kay Abernathy, all of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 12 noon until 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at Lyerly Funeral Home.
Memorial Service: 1 p.m. following the visitation in the James C. Lyerly Chapel. Dr. Randal Kirby will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.
Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, 308 W. Fisher St., Salisbury, NC 28144.
