CHARLOTTE - Carl Holland Thomas, 91, of Charlotte, died at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home Monday, March 17, 2008.

He was born June 9, 1916, in Rowan County, the oldest of 10 children to Junius and Callie Mae Frick Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II

He was employed with J.A. Baker Cotton Company. After leaving J.A. Baker, he started Thomas Cotton Company and was employed with Reid's Fine Foods for many years.

Carl was a very active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, serving on many committees, including the Pulpit committee, and serving as the financial secretary at the church for many years.

He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Carl's life centered on his immediate and extended family. He was a true Southern gentleman and greeted everyone with a beautiful smile and always with respect. He faced the hardships in his life with perseverance and without complaint.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Brown, and his son, Carl H. Thomas, Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mrs. Mary Thomas, son Dr. Robert D. Thomas and wife Anne and daughters Elizabeth and Dianne Thomas, all of Charlotte; brothers Ralph D. Thomas of Salisbury, Larry Thomas of Mooresville and Howard Thomas of Sachse, Texas; sisters Helen Cowan, Kay Abernathy, Betty Rose Witty and Joyce Trexler, all of Salisbury, and June Owen of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughter-in-law Julia Thomas; grandchildren Leesa Clardy, Craig Thomas and Dr. Laura Davis all of Charlotte, Scott Thomas of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Tracey Slauer of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren Ryan and Shelby Slauer of Atlanta, Ga., William Thomas of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Seth and Peyton Thomas, Susan and Sarah Davis and Julia Clardy, all of Charlotte.

Service: Funeral service for Mr. Thomas will be held Thursday, March 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Peter Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

His grandsons and great-grandsons, Craig, Scott, Jim, Bob, Pete and Ryan, will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207
