Rev. Dr. Billy Joe Leonard, 84, of Rhodes Road, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Hinkle Hospice House.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Second United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Joe Coltrane, Dr. Melvin Palmer and Dr. Lee Jessup officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Davidson Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Rev. Leonard was born March 8, 1926, in Davidson County, to Rev. Alrich Odell Leonard and Pearl Irene Peeler Leonard. He was a graduate of Lexington High School in 1943 and Catawba College in 1950, and Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1953. He was ordained on May 24, 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Peggy Sue Pickle in September 1953. He was a member of VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8. Rev. Leonard was also a member of the Board of Trustees at Catawba College. He served in the following pastorates, Paul’s Chapel, Lexington, Mt. Hope Church, Guilford County, and Second United Church of Christ, Lexington. He served as Chairman of Evangelism Committee of Southern Synod, Board of Trustees and Past President of Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds, and past member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Conference. Rev. Leonard was a member and past President of the Mental Health Association of Davidson County, Davidson County Red Cross, past President Board of Directors of Davidson County Mental Health and Retardation; Past Chaplain of West Lexington Fire Department; Board of Directors of CONTACT ministry, Chairman of Lexington Community Development, Past member of Board of Directors of Lexington Hospital; and a honorary member of Central Carolina Civitans. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Lindsay Paul Leonard.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Sue Pickle Leonard of the home; sons, Steve Leonard and wife, Ginie, of Washington DC, Mark Leonard and wife, Tanzy, of Asheboro, and Todd Leonard and wife, Tracey, of Lexington; daughters, Jody Spivey and husband, Guy, and Amy Smith and husband, Britt, all of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Rev. Donald Mark Leonard of Asheboro; and a sister, Martha Bruff and husband, Tommy, of Lexington.

Memorials may be made to the Billy Joe Leonard Scholarship Fund, Catawba College Development Office; Second UCC General Fund, Lexington, NC; or Hospice of Davidson County.
