Notes for Rev. James Herman Adams
Rev. J. Herman Adams

In 1918, a very excited couple in Hickory, Ky., rejoiced in the birth of their son, James Herman Adams. During his childhood, his parents nurtured him and directed his path. In August of 1932 at Liberty Baptist Church, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.

Several years after graduating from Lowes High School in Kentucky, he married Miss Frances Marian Moss on July 29, 1939. They moved to Chicago, where he entered the Moody Bible Institute. Upon completion of his studies there, he was ordained by his home church, Liberty Baptist, on October 25, 1942. He served four Kentucky Baptist churches before entering Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., to complete his formal training.

In 1958, they packed their bags and the family journeyed to Richmond, Va., to pastor Bethany Place Baptist Church for 13 and ½ years. Feeling led by God, they moved to Powhatan, Va., where he served as pastor of Red Lane Baptist Church for the next 13 and ½ years. They then retired on July 1, 1985 and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church in Richmond.

Rev. and Mrs. Adams continued to be active in the ministry by serving on several committees at Bethlehem. He had also served as interim pastor for several churches in the Richmond area, as well as in various capacities for the Middle District Baptist Association and Baptist General Board of Virginia.

Throughout their 60 years of ministry, Herman and Frances Adams have received many blessings, three of which are their children, Dr. Donald E. Adams, Mrs. Carol Adams Barkstrom and Mr. Robert Adams. They also had eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Adams was predeceased by his wife, Frances Adams, in 2006.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. Funeral services will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Adams Scholarship Fund, c/o Red Lane Baptist Church, Powhatan, VA; or the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Richmond, VA.
