Paul Junior "PJ" Cope

SPENCER - Paul Junior "PJ" Cope, 88, of Spencer, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

He was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Davie County to Catherine Dedmond Cope and Paul Cope. He was a graduate of Spencer High School.

He was a yard conductor for Southern Railway for 40 years before retiring in 1980. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Spencer. He excelled in furniture making and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine Lyerly Cope, on Dec. 7, 1995; and a grandson, Steve Leonard.

He is surved by a son, Paul W. Cope and his wife, Linda, of Vienna, Va.; four daughters, Carolyn Leonard and her husband, Kenneth, of Lexington, Candy Medinger and her husband, Grey, of Spencer, Kathy Isenhour and her husband, Dewey, of Eden and Tracey Hutchins and her husband, Randy, of Jamestown; a brother, Haywood Cope of Salisbury; and two sisters, Jewel Weddington of Spencer and Corrine Whitley of Salisbury. Eleven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive him.
