Notes for Robert Howard West “Bob” Kluttz
Robert Kluttz

McLEAN - Robert Kluttz, 93, died Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006) following a recent stroke at his home at Sunrise of McLean, Va.

Born April 30, 1912, at Granite Quarry, N.C., Bob Kluttz grew up there, in High Point and in Waynesboro, Va., following the early deaths of his parents, Peter Alexander Kluttz and Frances Elizabeth Frick. He excelled in baseball on the High Point High School team, and was admitted to Fishburne Military School and then Augusta Military Academy where he was on the varsity basketball and varsity baseball teams, and in the Major Monogram Club. Working at Staley's Silk Mill (later the location of Virginia Metalcrafters) he met his future wife, Isabel Vienna Chaplin, whom he married in 1933. Except for a few married years in High Point, they made their home in Waynesboro where he was with the Wayne Manufacturing Corporation for 35 years as supervisor of the brake department. He and his family were members of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church where he and Vienna were active for many years in Luther League, and he served as an usher and on many of the facility improvement projects for the church. With an active interest in sports his entire life, he was a popular player on the Waynesboro Generals, and coached Little League and Babe Ruth League.

He was predeceased by his dearly beloved wife of 59 years; his brother, Charles A. Kluttz of Waynesboro; and sisters, Pearl Bishop, Margaret Gilmore and Lucy Brewer, all of High Point.

He is survived by his son, Howard (wife, Jean) of Vienna, Va.; and many nieces and nephews in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland who fondly recall adventures with "Uncle Bob."

Friday (Feb. 3, 2006) a service will be held at 2 p.m. at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service, and at a reception following.

Saturday (Feb. 4, 2006) at 11 a.m., a brief commitment service will be held at Pleasant View Lutheran Church cemetery on Spring Hill Road.

Memorial contributions, in his name, can be made to any hospice, either directly or through the family at 1879 Amberwood Manor Court, Vienna, Va., 22182, or to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 S. Wayne Ave., Waynesboro, Va., 22980.

Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro is handling arrangements.
