Clyde Davis "Shorty" Almond, Jr.

Clyde Davis "Shorty" Almond, Jr., 68, of Norwood passed away Thursday afternoon, May 23, 2013.

A Celebration of Shorty's life will be held at 4:00PM, Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Memorial Baptist Church in Norwood. Rev. Daniel Flynn and Rev. Nathan Fox will officiate and interment will follow in Norview Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00, Saturday evening, May 25, 2013 at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.

Shorty was born November 5, 1944 in Stanly County to the late Clyde Davis Almond, Sr. and Mina Lee Kimrey Almond. He was a member of the first graduating class of South Stanly High School in 1963. He was a U S Air Force veteran, having served in Vietnam. Shorty retired as Vice President and Partner of Stanly Fixtures after 50 years of service. He had been a member of Memorial Baptist Church for 43 years. An active community man, he was a Charter member of the Norwood Jaycees where he helped bring Little League Baseball back to Norwood. He was a retired 20 year veteran of the Norwood City Volunteer Fire Department, where he had served as Captain and had received the Fireman of the Year award. He was a member of the James P. Lowder VFW Post 6183, where he was instrumental in establishing the annual Arbor Day Car Show. After his retirement, Shorty did not slow down. He loved being with family and attending events of his grandchildren. He also loved traveling to hear various bands perform beach music, GTO's, the New York Yankees and the Duke Blue Devils.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Almond.

He is survived by loving wife, Susan "Sam" Alice Morris Almond of the home; daughters, Amber Almond Dow and husband, David of Greensboro and Alyson Almond Boone and husband, Bill of Wake Forest; brothers, Keith Almond and wife, Vickie of Norwood, Darrell Almond and wife, Judy of Norwood and Butch Almond and wife, Teresa of Albemarle and sister in law, Sue Almond of Norwood; grandchildren, Delaney and Davis Dow and Katelyn and Grant Boone.

The family requests memorials be made to: The Scholarship Fund of Memorial Baptist Church, Norwood; Norwood VFW Post; or Hospice of Stanly County.
