Jasper Leroy Whitley

SALISBURY - Jasper Leroy Whitley, 81, of Salisbury, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at the N.C. State Veterans Nursing Home after three years of declining health.

Born March 9, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late Roxie Dora Eagle Whitley and James W. Whitley. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He worked for N.C. Finishing Company for 32 years and after retirement, worked for Rowan County Parks and Recreation Department. Mr. Whitley was a member of North Main Methodist Church and formerly a member of Long Street Methodist Church in East Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Secrest Whitley, on April 14, 1967, and his second wife, Pauline "Polly" Owens Whitley, on Sept. 19, 1987. Survivors include brother John Whitley of Concord; sister Kathleen Hutchinson of Salisbury; nephew and caregiver Terry Fries and wife Sheila of Salisbury; and a number of nieces and nephew.

Service : Graveside, 1 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dale Bost officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Rowan County Honor Guard.

Visitation : Following the service at the cemetery.
