CONCORD - John Calvin Whitley Sr., 81, of Concord, died February 28, 2008, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast.
Born May 7, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late James William Whitley and Roxie Dora Eagle Whitley. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II in the Seabees. Retired, he had been owner of Whitley's Floor Covering.
Mr. Whitley was a member of the American Legion for more than 40 years and DAV since 1977.
His wife, Patsy Jene Wilson Whitley, preceded him in death in 1988.
Surviving are four children, John C. Whitley Jr. and wife Janice of Charlotte, Suzanne Hege and husband Jeff of Concord, Luann Laubscher of Mooresville and Gene Whitley and wife Linda of Little Rock, Ark.; sister Cathleen Hutchinson of Statesville; grandsons Darrell Hege and fiancee Joy Fischer of Concord, Kyle and Karl Whitley of Tuscon, Ariz., and Nils Laubscher of Asheville; great-granddaughter Jordyn Hege of Concord; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend to the family Hope Caywood.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8 in the courtyard of All Saints Episcopal Church Columbarium, with military rites by DAV Honor Guard.
Visitation: The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 10-11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service.
Memorials: St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Whitley's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
