WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Curtis Slate McBride, 92, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Mr. McBride was born July 20, 1921 to Ila Snyder and John Floyd McBride in Spencer. He married his wife, Mary Ann Hill McBride, following graduation from Spencer High School. In 1944, Mr. McBride enlisted in the 3rd Infantry of the United States Army. He was called into action following the Battle of the Bulge. Along with his division, Mr. McBride walked across Germany, arriving in Czechoslovakia at the end of the war. Mr. McBride returned to his wife and son in Salisbury following discharge. He found work at N.C. Finishing Company, eventually retiring from there after 45 loyal years. He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Lexington, where he served as choir director for 40 years. Mr. McBride moved to Pfafftown in 2012, where he lived at Vienna Village Assisted living facility.

Mr. McBride was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife; an infant daughter, Kaye Elizabeth McBride; and a sister, Nell McBride Hunt.

He is survived by his two sons, Larry McBride and wife Peggie of Virginia Beach, Va. and Rick McBride and wife Julie of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Mary McBride Hackett and husband Brandon of Knoxville, Tenn., Owen A. McBride of Colombia, S.C, and Sarah McBride Utech and husband Todd of Clayton; five great- grandchildren, Hailey Utech, Emma Hackett, Caroline Hackett, Lauren Hackett, and Kathryn Utech.

Service and Visitation:A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home, Main St. Chapel. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. The family will have a private graveside in Gold Hill following the service.

Memorials:In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215 , or to the charity of the donar’s choice.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Vienna Village, especially his care taker, Jasmine, for all the compassionate care for past two years, and also the support and help from the Palliative Care Department at Forsyth Medical Center.
