John Thomas Tolley, Jr.

John Thomas Tolley, Jr., 85, of Rockwell, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

He was born in Johnston County, NC, on July 11, 1931, to the late John Thomas Tolley, Sr. and Flossie Lancaster Tolley. Mr. Tolley was a 1950 graduate of Durham High School and attended Salisbury Business College. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army in which he served as Chief of the Division Message Center of the 27th Signal Base Depot in Germany, serving from 1951-1953. He retired as Maintenance Supervisor from Norfolk Southern after 42 years. Mr. Tolley was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell where he was a former member of the church council, active with Lutheran Men in Mission, served as an usher, and assisted with the sound system during worship. He was a member of Miller-Russell American Legion Post #112 where he served as Commander and was a former Spencer Jaycee. Mr. Tolley was a long time golfer at Corbin Hills Golf Club, an avid supporter of Rowan County American Legion Baseball, and a faithful UNC Tarheel.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Tolley was preceded in death by his sister, Lena King.

He is survived by his wife, Nell Misenheimer Tolley, son, John Thomas Tolley, III and wife, Terri, of Durham, NC, daughter, Renee' Tolley Page and husband, Bryan, of Burlington, NC, sister, Iris Basinger of Florida, and grandchildren, Troy Page and wife, Shannon, and Jack Tolley.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell.

A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM in St. James Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Jason Huebner, pastor.

Burial with military graveside rites by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and NC National Guard will be held in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, Rockwell.
