Ernest “Ernie” Eagle Honbarger

Mr. Ernest “Ernie” Eagle Honbarger, age 98 of Salisbury, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Genesis Eldercare in Salisbury after a few weeks of declining health. Ernie was born on June 3, 1921 in Rowan County to the late George Wayne Honbarger and Edith Elmira Eagle Honbarger. His wife of 38 years, Johnsie Kennerly Honbarger along with his brothers, Hoke and Raymond Honbarger and sisters, Ruby Corriher, Priscilla Bradshaw and Edith Hamblett all preceded him in death. Ernie attended and graduated from Rowan County schools.

After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He served in World War II where part of his time was served on the USS Texas. He received several medals while serving in the African Middle Eastern area, American Area Philippine Liberation and the Asiatic Pacific Area where he received two stars. He then received an honorable discharge once his tour was completed. Ernie was a true workhorse. He spent his career working for the ABC store in China Grove and served on the ABC Board from 1949-1980. He loved to garden and was always ready to work whether on the farm or at the family sawmill. He had an endless amount of energy and a tremendous work ethic. While at Genesis, he loved to play Bingo with the other residents.

Those left to cherish his memory are his brother, G.W. (Bob) Honbarger, numerous nieces and nephews along with numerous great nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his special friend, Ann O’Hara.

Funeral service for Ernie will be on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Steve Holshouser. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00pm prior to the funeral service at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home. Full Military Burial will be at 3:00pm immediately following the funeral service at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury.
