ALBEMARLE — Melvin Luther Furr, 72, of N.C. Highway 49, New London, died Saturday (Sept. 2, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born March 15, 1928, Mr. Furr was a son of the late Luther D. and Maggie Bell Biles Furr. He was retired from Albemarle Spinning. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he served during World War II, and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife, Jane Furr, of the home; son, Dwight Furr, Mount Pleasant; daughters, Vivian Estridge Kelly, Singapore, Melba Furr, Albemarle; brother, Roy I. Burris, Mount Pleasant; sisters, Doris Morgan, Mae Morgan, Sue Morris, all of Richfield, Sarah Carter, Kannapolis, Nell Moucka, Concord, and Marie Cauble, Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Antioch Baptist Church, Richfield, conducted by the Rev. Gene Sides and the Rev. Jason Lee. Burial, church cemetery. Military graveside rites by the Stanly County Disabled American Veterans.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home.

Memorials: Antioch Baptist Church, or Hospice of Stanly County.
