SALISBURY - Dewey Ray Morgan, Sr., 83, of Salisbury, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011 at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 16, 1928 in Rowan County, a son of the late James Edgar and Etta Belle Bassinger Morgan.
Mr. Morgan was a graduate of Boyden High School. He was employed for 30 years with Norfolk Southern Railroad as a conductor and brakeman. Following retirement, his life was dedicated to caring for his wife.
His hobbies included watching western movies and the stock market, reading, drinking coffee, playing Rook and enjoying vacations to the beach. The greatest joy of his life was his family. He was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jane Swicegood Morgan on Feb. 7, 1993; and one brother Kenneth Morgan.
Left to cherish his memories are his sons, Dewey Ray Morgan, Jr. (Terry) of Havelock, Roger Morgan, "Jimmy" Morgan (Gail), both of Salisbury; daughter, Lori Morgan Bernhardt (Perry), of Salisbury; two brothers Dwight Morgan (Eleanor) and Gary Morgan (Gwen), all of Gold Hill; one sister Colleen Vanderford (Ken) of Salisbury; six grandchildren, Brad Morgan, Jaime Klinger, Trey Morgan, Jennifer Aldridge, Maggie Powell and Melissa Bernhardt; and two great-grandchildren Rylee Klinger and Dylan Morgan.
Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at Lyerly Funeral Home.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 East Ridge Road, Salisbury, with the Rev. Carroll Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
