Ray Gene Smith

Ray Gene Smith, 81, of Albemarle, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Stanly Manor in Albemarle.

Ray Gene was born October 28, 1934 in Stanly County to the late Raeford Utah Smith and the late Selma Lee Shaver Smith. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Melissa Ellen Smith; grandson, Tate Nathaniel Williams.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be at 3:00 pm, Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel, officiated by Rev. Aaron Brooks. The burial will follow at Anderson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 2225 East Main Street, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be gathering at the home.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Joann Hinson Smith of the home; son, Jeff Smith and wife Denise of Albemarle; daughter, Lisa Williams and husband Jeff of Albemarle; brother, James Kenneth Smith and wife Judy of Albemarle; grandchildren, Josh Smith and wife Samantha, Brittany Ward and Bailey Williams, all of Albemarle, Shanna Smith of Clarendon, TX; step grandchildren, Monica Talbert and husband Billy of Badin, Derek Williams and wife Holly of Albemarle; great-grandchildren, Emmalyn Smith, Tatum Smith, Teagan Smith, all of Albemarle; step great-grandchildren, Adyson and Kynlee Talbert of Badin, and Carter Williams of Albemarle.

Ray Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a graduate of Albemarle High School, and was well known for playing football for Toby Webb. Ray Gene worked as a potman and crane operator for Alcoa, and was a proud member of the 25 year club. He was a lifetime member of Anderson Grove Baptist Church. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Community Hospice and the staff at Stanly Manor for their compassionate care.
