Notes for William “Kermit” Efird
Kermit Efird

Kermit Efird was born in the Ridgecrest community of Stanly County on September 10, 1929, and departed us for his heavenly home on June 18, 2015.  He spent his last three months at home under the loving care of his wife, Noreta.  The family is very grateful for the support and compassionate care given by Hospice of Stanly and The Uwharrie.

He was the last surviving child of the late Shuford and Zula Hatley Efird.   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his seven brothers and one sister: Lewis Efird, Caston Efird, Marvin Efird, Horace Efird, Jewel Efird Burris, J. Carol Efird and Kenneth Efird.  He was also looking forward to a heavenly reunion with his infant daughter, Kimberly Dawn, who died prematurely after three short days of life in 1961.

He is survived by his wife and soul mate of almost 58 years, Noreta Swaringen Efird; son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Cindy Efird of Wesley Chapel; granddaughter Courtney Geiss and her family, husband Adam and two great-granddaughters, Aubrey and Caitlyn of Waxhaw; grandson Chris Efird and his wife Sheri of Wesley Chapel.

The service to celebrate the life of Kermit Efird will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 2:00 pm at Porter United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. David McCauley.  The church is located just off of Hwy 52 at 40031 Porter Rd, Norwood, NC.  His burial will take place in the Porter Community Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Edwards Funeral Home of Norwood on Friday evening, June 19 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Kermit was a graduate of Ridgecrest High School Class of 1947, for which he also drove a bus and played on the basketball team.  He proudly served in the US Army  from 1951 to 1953.  Kermit worked at both Young's Manufacturing of Norwood and Stanly Fixtures of Aquadale before founding (with his father-in-law) Rocky River Springs Fish House in Aquadale 47 years ago.  In addition to serving flounder, he served the community by being a member of the Aquadale Lions Club for over 40 years, serving several terms as a board member with the Bank of Stanly, and serving as a loyal member and worker of Porter United Methodist Church.

In addition to his family, faith and community, his other interests included being a life-long fan of RED SOX baseball and DUKE basketball!

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either of the following: Porter United Methodist Church or Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
