Floyd Whitley

Floyd Alonzo Whitley of Albemarle, 79, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at Mercy Hospital Special Services in Charlotte, following a brief illness.He was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Stanly County, and was the son of the late Alonza Simeon Whitley and the late Mary Roena Eudy Whitley Burleson.

He was retired from Charlotte Pipe and Foundry in Charlotte. He was a member of West Albemarle Church in Albemarle. He served in the Korean War from 1948-1950. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR races, cowboy movies, and spending time with family and friends.

He leaves many loved ones: his son, Michael Whitley of Charlotte, and his daughter, Lisa Tucker of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Ryan Whitley, Wesley Burris, Daniel Tucker, Johnson Tucker; great-grandchildren, Richard and Hayden Tucker; sisters, Bessie Hill of Albemarle, Carolyn Furr and husband Jan, and Lynda Almond and husband Larry, all of Locust; brother, Vance Whitley and wife Betty of Oakboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Wayne Burleson; sisters, Auta Belle Clark and Delaine Eudy; and brothers, Vernon Whitley, Craven Whitley and Wade Whitley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Adam Hatley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military honors graveside by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV Chapter 12.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Forrest Oaks, Stanly Medical, Northeast Medical, Mercy Hospital and all those who helped with Floyd over the last several months.
