Notes for Lottie Sue Fesperman
Lottie Sue Fesperman Arthur

Elon – Mrs. Lottie Sue Fesperman Arthur, 93, of Elon died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Sunday, November 30, 2014, after several weeks of declining health. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who spent her life caring for her loved ones.

Born in Greensboro, where she spent her early youth, Lottie Sue first moved with her family to Hagerstown, Md., where she completed high school and met her husband-to-be, Robert K. Arthur (Bob). She returned to North Carolina to attend Catawba College and obtained a bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and music. Upon graduation, she married Bob, and they began a marriage which lasted for sixty-six years until Bob’s death in 2011. She and Bob started their married lives in Hagerstown, moved briefly to Owensboro, KY, and then in 1949, with their children, Kris and David, came to Burlington, where they lived until making a final move to a home in Elon.

Lottie Sue was the daughter of Harvey Augustus Brown Fesperman and Mary Naomi Peeler Fesperman, both deceased. Dr. Fesperman was the minister of the First Evangelical and Reformed Church (now First Reformed United Church of Christ) in Burlington when the Arthurs moved to Burlington and the family began a life-long involvement with the church. Lottie Sue was a member of the Fesperman Bible Class, the Women’s Circle, and the church choir. She served the church in many ways, but her greatest gift was her beautiful voice which she shared through solo and choral works.

In 1952, Lottie Sue began a teaching career in the Burlington School system. Over the period of the next twenty-five years, she taught English at Broad Street Junior High and Williams High Schools, with a two-year break following the birth of her third child, Scott. During this time, she prepared many young people for college or the working world, drilling them in vocabulary, writing, and reading skills.

Following her retirement from the school system, Lottie Sue and Bob were fortunate to enjoy many more years together, in both their mountain home and their home in Elon, spending time with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Kristin Arthur Landrum of Greensboro; son, Scott Harvey Arthur and wife Jennifer of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Melanie Landrum Rains and husband Jim of Ramseur, Jonathan Robert Landrum and wife Piper of Holly Springs, Michael Scott Arthur of New York, NY and LeAnn Nichole Arthur of Angier; four great-grandchildren, Easton and Fletcher Rains of Ramseur and Casey and Graham Landrum of Holly Springs; a sister, Betty Grey Kepley of Roanoke, VA.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert David Arthur and his wife Nancy; son-in-law, John Will Landrum, III; and two sisters, Mary Brown Winters and Katherine Naomi Eanes.

A memorial service will be conducted at the First Reformed United Church of Christ on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Entombment will be at Alamance Memorial Park in the Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Reformed United Church of Christ Choir Fund, Burlington, NC.
