Don Morton Knotts

Don Morton Knotts, 77, of 1514 Hyman Drive passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2007.

Don was born in Stanly County on September 24, 1929, to the late Ernest T. and Ila M. Knotts. He graduated from Albemarle High School and Duke University. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Knotts was retired from Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance Company. For 30 years, Don had been very active in the Stanly County Association for Retarded Citizens. He established the McAdams Endowment. He was active in the groundbreaking of the first vocational workshop in 1965, and served as president in 1967. 1969 and 1970.

Don Knotts joined Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company in 1959. He served as President of Life Underwriters Association and held all offices in that organization before moving up to President. He was selected as J.C. Man of the Year in 1970. He was named Civitan Citizen of the Year, and received the N.C. Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1980. Also in 1980 he was recognized by the Stanly County Board of Commissioners as the Outstanding Volunteer in Human Services.

Don Knotts was a member of First Baptist Church and had served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and on various church committees.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Terrell Knotts, and his sister, Ila Lee Knotts Moose.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Jane Redwine Knotts; sons, Tom Tindall Knotts of Charlotte and Mack Morton Knotts and wife, Jeffrey, grandchildren, Ernest Benjamin Knotts and Tindall Caroline Knotts of Greensboro; brothers, Ernest M. Knotts and wife, Eleanor, of Albemarle, John Douglas Knotts and wife, Patsy, of Carolina Beach and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle on Thursday, July 12, from 7-9.. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Albemarle, on Friday, July 13, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Harold McDonald will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Stanly County Association for Retarded Citizens (Arc of Stanly) or Hospice of Stanly County.
