Cletus "Pete" Whitley
Cletus "Pete" Whitley, 88 years of age, of Oakboro, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 at his home.
Mr. Whitley was born April 14, 1929 to the late Martin Benjamin and Emma Helms Whitley.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Clara Mae Curlee; brothers, Kenneth C. Whitley and M.A. Whitley.
Pete was a retired brick mason and a long time member of Stanly County Beekeepers Association.
He made several contributions to his community through his work such as, donating his time to building the field house at West Stanly High School, the old Boy Scout Hut at Oakboro Park, Oakboro Rural Volunteer Fire Department Building, the bath houses for the Oakboro Swim Club, as well as, many other projects around the community. Pete enjoyed several hobbies but will be most remembered as an avid hunter.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm, Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle.
The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle, officiated by Elder Ted Morton.
Burial will conclude in Smith's Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Oakboro with military rites performed by the Stanly County DAV.
Survivors include: wife of 63 years, Lynette W. Whitley of Oakboro, NC; daughters, Pam Chaney of Banner Elk, NC, Rhonda Whitley of Oakboro, NC; son, Alex (Dawn) Whitley of Lumberton, NC; grandchildren, Stephanie (Tony) Huneycutt, Shannon (Heather) Chaney, Dwain Tucker, III, Jacob (Erica) Tucker, Erin Whitley, Zach Whitley; great-grandchildren, Carson Barbee, Lauren Huneycutt, William Huneycutt, Lucas Jones, Cayden Tucker, Mason Jones, Jayce Tucker; brother, Roy L. (Sylvia) Whitley of Oakboro, NC; sister, Judy Helms of Oakboro, NC; brother, Keith (Frances) Whitley of Oakboro, NC.
